Career & Technology Education Center
Yavapai College, Prescott, Arizona
A reused and renovated industrial facility in a brownfield area,
the Yavapai College Career and Technology Education Center (CTEC)
building is imbued with sustainable design. An existing steel
foundry was transformed into a new educational facility to include
shops for welding, metal-smithing, automotive repair and bodywork,
demonstration classrooms, student and faculty support spaces,
and computer facilities. Functions are enclosed by either existing
poured concrete walls, new CMU walls, or visually permeable steel
mesh partitions 10 ft high. These mesh cages allow security and
flexibility as they are demountable and on a universal ten foot
grid. The walls are punctuated by numerous sliding gates. Whenever
possible, all equipment is similarly demountable, with power drops
and supplemental HVAC from above giving additional flexibility.
New ceilings are inserted to baffle noise, reflect light, and
provide directional clues.
A portion of the new space will be left undeveloped for the expansion
of current programs and to attract new industrial partners. The
project was completed in seven months from planning to occupancy. |
